Jonny and I were recently sitting in the car, talking through details and next steps for our nonprofit, Lost Black Sheep. These conversations have become a regular part of our lives, dreaming, planning, and figuring out what’s next.
From the back seat, our daughter asked us, “What are you guys talking about?” She’s always curious, always wanting to be part of the conversation. We told her, “We’re talking about Lost Black Sheep.” She paused for a moment and then asked a question that stopped me in my tracks.
“There are more lost black sheep? How many more lost black sheep are there?”
The question hit me like a gut punch.
Because the truth is, the answer is heavy. It’s overwhelming. It’s not something you can easily explain to a child, or even fully wrap your heart around as an adult. “There are so many more,” I said. “Too many to count. And we’re going to help as many of them as we can.” In that moment, I was reminded exactly why we do what we do.
Lost black sheep are everywhere. They are the ones who feel forgotten, overlooked, or written off. They are waiting, waiting for help, for an opportunity, for someone to believe there might still be an answer for them. That’s where we come in.
Lost Black Sheep exists to step into those moments of waiting and offer hope, support, and a real chance at healing. We can’t help everyone, but we can help someone. And then another. And another. Sometimes the simplest questions reveal the deepest truths.
There are so many lost black sheep.
And as long as there are, we will keep showing up.
